Assignment 1 - Social Technologies
When it comes to social technologies you can't pass up Facebook. It's the most popular social networking site the Internet has seen since its inception. Facebook has captivated the world and even a movie has been produced to explain how this site got so popular so quickly. While it did have fairly humble beginnings as a way for university students to stay in contact with each other it has exploded into so much more. Facebook can be used to communicate with friends and family, share photos, plan events, share links to other sites and articles, play games, advertise business and as proven in recent world events, can over throw governments by allowing the masses to share ideas and beliefs. So what do all the uses have in common? Communication. Facebook is a fantastic way to commincate with as little or as many people, very quickly and effectively.
To take a recent example, I wanted to plan a sunday afternoon event to say farwell to the summer and catch the new Hunger Games movie with a few friends. Facebook was the easiest way to plan and get feedback for my event. There's two ways to do this, the first is to send out a group message telling everyone you want to invite the details of your event, or create an event in facebook and this allows each person you invite to accept or reject your invitation. For a small event the group message probaly is the easiest and quickest way to get the information out but if its for example an engagement party with 50 plus people it would be easier to manage through creating an event.
